On October 25th, I'll be running the Marine Corps Marathon! I run for many reasons: to practice perseverance, to feel the elation of overcoming a challenge, to find sanity and calmness in our hectic world, and to prove that I can do what I set my mind to.
These are the same values that inspire me to be involved at the Washington School for Girls. The girls at WSG learn to work hard, to continue to press forward even when things are really difficult, and to practice thoughtful prayer and mindfulness. As a result, the girls are crushing stereotypes and proving to everyone that they can succeed. I'm still astounded that the DC high school graduation rate is the lowest in the country, and in the neighborhood where WSG is located it is under 60%. But 98% of girls from WSG go on to graduate from high school and the majority pursue higher education.
The girls at WSG are creative, compassionate, and competent young women who deserve to have the best. That is why I am running the Marine Corps Marathon in their honor. I hope that you will join me in making a donation to the Washington School for Girls. This school does great work for the young ladies who attend, and your donation makes a tangible impact on the lives of students in Southeast DC. My goal is to raise $18,000 and support the cost of educating one student at WSG this year.
