WSG Global Service Program

Dear WSG Families,

Over the last few years The Washington School for Girls has worked to expand the spirit of service and community within our school. This year we are excited to roll out our Global Service Program. Under this program we are expanding our current 6th Grade Service Learning to cover our 7th and 8th graders as well. The service program will include three different phases:

  1. Teacher Planned/Led – 6th graders

This service program will continue the long lasting partnership between WSG, The Maret School and So Others Might Eat (SOME). 6th graders will rotate twice a month in their advisory groups to perform hands on service with 6th graders from Maret at SOME.

  1. Student Planned/Teacher Supervised – 7th graders

To complete this program 7th graders will need to complete the GoLead 30 Hour Service Learning Course and plan their own service learning project. 7th graders will have three opportunities to complete this requirement throughout the year. A GoLead club will be offered in both the fall and the spring. 7th graders not enrolled in either club will be able to also meet this requirement during the spring Intersession. Completion of this program will be factored into their final Extended Day Grade.

  1. Student Driven – 8th graders

8th graders will complete at least 10 hours of community service at a site off-campus of their choosing, but approved by WSG, no later than May 1st. The service should be meaningful and community orientated. 8th graders will need to complete their 10 hours of service before being invited to participate in the end of the year graduation activities. Families seeking assistance with identifying service opportunities for their students should contact Mr. Kitchen for help.

Goodness and generosity are two of WSG’s core values. This program will encourage all of our students to live up to these values by doing good for themselves and their community as well as exhibiting a spirit of generosity. Should you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Mr. Kitchen at or 202-678-1113 ext. 108.

In the Spirit,
