Volunteer

Volunteers provide tremendous service to our school each year. The range of involvement spans broadly from one-time visits - where volunteers participate in a career fair, leadership series presentation, or fundraising event - to weekly tutoring, hosting student clubs during Extended Day, and office support. Our dedicated volunteers make many of our programs possible and enrich our school community with the diversity of experience that each person brings to WSG.

Recurring Volunteer Opportunities

Small group and 1:1 learning opportunities are an important part of WSG’s program. We welcome volunteers to support these efforts by serving as classroom aides or tutors. Tutors and aides are most successful when they can build a foundation of trust with students, so we ask that you commit to a consistent schedule for the school year. Typically, volunteers will serve once a week in this capacity.

WSG’s Extended Day and Out of School Time programs rely on partnerships to ensure that our students can experience a wide variety of activities. We love exploring new opportunities and welcome conversations with volunteers who would like to share their skills and talents for a semester-long club. Study Hall Monitors provide guidance and oversight to students seeking to complete their work before heading home. Volunteers in the Extended Day program must commit to a weekly time block and be present for all club/study hall sessions.

Flexible Volunteer Opportunities

WSG students, especially those in our middle school, are beginning to imagine what their future careers might be. We invite volunteers to participate in a number of opportunities throughout the year that support our students’ exploration of potential careers, including career fairs, mock interview sessions, guest speakers in the Leadership Series, and field trips to work sites. These experiences typically happen throughout the year and can often be planned for a mutually beneficial date and time.

Those who cannot commit to a weekly schedule may still support students and contribute to the learning environment. We have special opportunities for classroom readers, field trip chaperones, special helpers at school events, classroom decorators, and grading assistants throughout the year. These duties require less training and may have a more flexible schedule.

An important way that volunteers can support the mission of WSG is through mobilizing your community to get involved and supporting outreach events. From serving on a committee for a fundraiser, volunteering at an event, or hosting your own mini-crowdfunding campaign, there are many ways that sharing your commitment to WSG can inspire others. Our Development Team is happy to support and guide your efforts.

There are many ways to support WSG behind the scenes. File organization and management, data entry, and translation services are some of the ways volunteers can support the operations of the school. Additionally, providing professional services as a volunteer consultant can help WSG grow our capacity to support students and ensures that more of our budget can go directly to student needs.

Requirements

Volunteers interested in direct service with students must be able to pass criminal and Child Protective Services background checks and complete trainings and orientation at the direction of WSG that will prepare them for service. These requirements may vary based on the volunteer role.
